Last night in Yale's Battell Chapel, crowds crammed "A Moment of Crisis: Race at Yale Teach-In."

Do you think of Yale as a religious institution? Up until 1926, Yale students were required to attend services at Battell Chapel:

Inside are stained glass windows depicting such characters as George Berkeley and Jonathan Edwards. It's quite a venue.

Here's the the Yale Daily News report on last night's teach-in. Excerpt:
The forum... opened with two spoken word poems performed by black female students. The first highlighted the lack of support that black men offer their female counterparts. Both poems brought audience members to their feet in a standing ovation.
I'd like to see video of that. Strange to begin with what sounds like an attack on black men. A real crowd-pleaser, we're told.
“I want to make sure that I’m moving towards the informed camp and moving myself away from the ignorant camp,” Molly Zeff ’07 SOM ’16 said. “This is a fight that’s only going to be possible if the people who most benefit from systemic racism, which include myself, are fully aware of the people who most suffer from systemic racism.”

Mojique Tyler ’19 expressed similar sentiments, adding that he could not sit idly by while his community is experiencing problems and challenges.... Describing himself as a black, atheist, agender and Jewish individual with one parent who is white, Tyler... said the struggle of identity that the forum touched upon was relevant to his own experiences....

Down.

College is unneeded and superfluous. It doesn't educate. It doesn't promote any interesting ideas. It is little more than a cancer.

Republicans, who run most states, have ZERO need to protect the fucking idiots who run the show and oppose them.

Defund it all.

Then kill off the student loan program. Kill off ALL research grants to any self-professed universities.

Let them wither on the vine.

Then tax their endowments. Heavily.
Then put term limits on government employment.
Then do away with tax benefits involving non-profits.

Kill the snake.

crisis
noun, plural crises

1. a stage in a sequence of events at which nothing much happens.

2. a condition of stability or safety, as in social, economic, political, or international affairs, leading to nothing much happening.

3. a melodramatic emotional upheaval in a person's life even though nothing much happened.

At Yale the other day, there was a debate on Affirmative Action at which the very idea that someone might not wholeheartedly approve of Affirmative Action had some students in tears: http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2015/11/11/ypu-debates-affirmative-action/

I note that the article doesn't say which side won the debate when it went to a vote. That makes me assume Amy Wax did. I also note that although it mentions the Buckley free speech conference brouhaha, it doesn't mention that protestors spats on some departing members of the audience and called some of the minority attendees race traitors.

THAT's racism - both the legacy of it and the current neglect about it; THAT is what we should be working to fix.

A bunch of spoiled young men and women attending the top schools in the world - in most cases for free - are simply NOT suffering from racism.

What a damned crazy world we live in.

Fall 2011, before the 2012 election. Coincidence?

Is the strategy to stoke a pointless protest movement -- not to accomplish anything -- but with the goal that the inevitable disappointment and disaffection translates into a "no place else to go," youth GOTV push for the Democrat nominee?

Worked for Obama. Not sure Hillary can replicate.

I'm not surprised young black women would cheer another black woman who calls black men out for not supporting them. A disproportionate number of black women are single parents, and a disproportionate number of black babies are aborted. The black civil rights movement of the 60's never acknowledged the role of black women in the movement. Stokely Carmichael once said, "The role of women in the SNCC is prone." Black women face more disrespect from black men than they do from white people. Besides that, the current state of the black family, which is in much worse shape than it was in the days of segregation, allows white people to dismiss any complaints about racism until black families clean up their act. Ask any black woman whether she'd rather be some black guy's baby mama or his wife and see what she says.

It's become apparent that amongst a certain sect of young people in this country the most coveted position is victimhood. Being a victim (or a member of victimized class) grants one attention, sympathy, and power. These are all things that pathological narcissists seek. It's certainly a strange state of affairs.

Affirmative Action is the root of the problems at Yale and the University of Missouri. Nearly all colleges lower standards to achieve desired percentages. Why? The elite schools (like Yale) accept all of the top black students and then to fill numbers take some more that would do perfectly fine at lower tier schools (like Mizzou). Because there aren't enough qualified students to go around, schools all the way down must compromise standards. If you're a black student who enrolls at the best school who admitted you, it's likely many of your Asian and white peers will have higher SAT's and GPA's than you did. Dropout rates among black students are much higher and this is no surprise. College is not the easiest time for any of us, so why do we place a special burden on black students?

Indeed. I beileve the single mother statistic is about 80% now? When the overwhelming cultural norm is being a baby mama, how does a woman even conceive (sorry) of matrimony as possible, let alone understand its value, never mind develop the bargaining power to achieve it?

As for "allow[ing] white people to dismiss any complaints..." I happen to be white but I don't think that descriptor is entirely relevant. Any policymaker, of any color/gender/etc etc etc, faces the same question: what incentives work? What is the best allocation of resources? America has poured trillions into this project and things seem to be worse than ever. The only thing worse than refusing to give money to a loser, is to give the money and then listen to all the excuses as to why more money is needed. It's not so much the irritation of being played, it's the fact that the loser really believes his BS excuses. Or has to pretend to believe it, which is even worse.

Now, the complaint is coming from black women, and those women are presumably on the Left, so this complaint is fine, it's not racist. It's a who-whom thing, you understand.

Here's a secret to give College Students: Don't Care what other people think of you. Do not seek approval from anyone, live your life as you please. Note: You do have to seek approval from your Boss; if you don't want that, start your own company. You do have to seek approval from your spouse too, but marriage is optional anyway.

It's not racism.

These young men and women are given incredible opportunities at one of the top schools in the world. If they use these opportunities correctly they are set for life.

But instead of seeing opportunities they see obstacles. Obstacles put there because of their race.

Racism exists. Yes. Black people have been horribly mistreated and to a degree still are.

But this is not an example of that.

Richard Dolan said...

"Do you think of Yale as a religious institution?"

Well, as a famous Yale LS alum might say, it depends on the meaning of "religious." Not in any standard way, certainly not in any recognizably Christian way, but very much so in a European-style, post-Christian way. And that's been true for a long time.

A little history is helpful to get the context. Battell Chapel provided the pulpit for Wm Sloane Coffin in the 1960s. While he often presided on Sunday mornings at a non-denominational service (I occasionally stopped in to hear him), his usual sermon might start with a nod to some Biblical text but quickly became all about social and political issues of the day, all viewed from a decidedly lefty perspective. I don't know who the current chaplain at Battell is, but I have no doubt that on Sunday mornings, if you wandered into Battell, you'd hear the same kind of talk. I suspect that the only difference would be the particular social and political issues up for discussion, but still viewed from the same lefty perspective.

Despite his sometimes over-the-top approach, Coffin always struck me as a good and decent man, and he had the sense to pick issues that at least merited the heavy moralizing that he brought to them (the War and the civil rights battles of the 60s being the two most prominent ones). I didn't necessarily agree with him, but respected his seriousness of purpose. Today's 'crisis' at Yale (and Mizzou) seems more ephemeral. The immediate occasion for all the fuss (the hypothetical Halloween costume silliness at Yale, and the even less specific complaints at Mizzou) are the opposite of serious. Underneath all that noise, I get the feeling that the main source of complaint is a feeling on the part of the protesting black students that they feel they don't quite fit in. For their part, they both want and don't want to be identified (pigeon-holed) as hyphenated members of the academic community; for the larger academic community, they provide a helpful diversity statistic and so are always thought of with the hyphen (i.e., an exemplar of a group, not an individual).

Strange, really strange. And there's no real solution. After all the noise and poetry readings and declarations of solidarity, I suspect things will go on pretty much as they did before, except that the players in this drama will be more wary of each other as everyone waits for the next eruption.

"Why would any aware and loving parent want to send their son or daughter to an undergraduate program at Yale University?"

I may be able to answer that.

When my son got into Yale (not as the beneficiary of any special preference), we watched him experience a degree of happiness that we had never seen before. For the first time, he felt that years of toil that had begun in middle school had been recognized and rewarded. We are not tiger parents, but for some reason this child of ours had a focus and will to succeed that came out of nowhere. Night after night, weekend after weekend--reading, reading, reading. What parent would thwart their child's desire to enjoy the fruits of all that effort? And Yale actually has a fairly rigorous undergraduate program, at least for those who abjure the multitude of "social justice" type courses.

The protestors that you see on the news are not the majority of Yale undergraduates. Most are like my son: career-oriented grinds, trying to ignore the protests and get on with their studies until the madness abates. Those students are the victims of a spineless and hypocritical administration that continues to appease the thugs and bullies. At the beginning of last year, the president of Yale gave a speech extolling the importance of free speech on campus. Fine sentiments, but did he mean it? Apparently not, since Professor Christakis has now been forced to issue a groveling apology. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2015/11/09/hundreds-march-at-yale-in-solidarity-with-minority-students/

It is worth noting that all of this insanity started after Yale announced that it will spend $50 million to "increase faculty diversity." http://news.yale.edu/2015/11/03/yale-launches-five-year-50-million-initiative-increase-faculty-diversity. That's a lot of African-American Studies professors. But the agitators still insist that Yale is deeply racist institution that is indifferent to their needs. No one dares to contradict them.

I despair, not just for Yale, but for our country.

A significant portion of the students are failing academically and will fail professionally after they leave the university.

And so they are frightened and are throwing temper tantrums.

To whom is it applied in Thwaite's papers?

IIRC, it was Caribbean natives (Indians) ...tho it's been a long time since I read it; I got bored by the stuff later than about 1800 so it wasn't the cite below.

The Library of Congress has a very deficient version online, complete with a broken search engine.

American Notes: Travels in America(**), 1750-1920
0 Items containing the exact words "people of color".

The first item returned contained the exact words "people of color":
"Of this vast multitude[link might be temporary], there is no city in the world composed of so many different nations. You have here 20,000 free negroes, or as they are called people of color; 50,000 Germans and Dutch; 100,000 Irish, besides French, Danes, Swiss, Welsh, English, Scotch, Italians, Turks, Chinese, Swedes, Russians, Norwegians, Poles, Hungarians, Spaniards, Sicilians, Africans, and, in short, a few of all the nations upon the earth; though you see neither priests, beggars, soldiers, nor drunken men. There are supposed to be 50,000 people who arrive at and depart from New York every day." (1855 or so).

**I started out at "Early Western Travels" and somehow ended up in "Travels in America".

The loc.gov website has some very cool stuff, but terrible access.

There seems to be a significant percentage of college students who desperately want to be victims.

Historically that usually results in getting exactly what they want. Also death.

Not good.

It's an old religious revival meeting at Yale. There is an urgent message spoken by evangelists with urgency. Listeners must accept the message, repent of privilege, and be saved. Resist the message, and you are damned. There is no dialogue or debate or difference of opinion, for the message of Critical Race Theory is the Gospel Truth.

The religious revival idea was suggested to me by Jonathan Edwards and his involvement in the First Great Awakening.

I'm surprised with all this campus activism, there's no real major movement towards things that the schools could and should do something about--bringing down tuition costs, or providing better real world training to make the graduates more employable or even more intelligent. No, instead we get screeching over why the schools aren't eliminating any negative feelings caused by real or imagined slights.

I'd say this is because the students are essentially children, but for crying out loud--almost all of them are technically adults.

Considering what is happening among our elite--and Yale certainly counts as that--we are watching the rot in society take hold. The decline is well under way.

Ol Eli was a crook ---or at least had dealings on the side which were forbidden by his employer, the East India Company. Made a lot of dough though. And he may well have been involved in the slave trade, although what he and he colony of Madras were selling were Indians rather than Africans. See the Wiki entry on Eli.

So I dunno--should a black student go to Yale, the institution being in part founded or at least funded by a fellow involved in the slave trade?

Now THAT is funny stuff. These activists kids are not interested in "real world training". Even to mention such a thing would dismiss their world view, cause fear and pain, display you white privilege, far exceed the micro-aggression level... ya heather, ya.

We're in a culture now that prizes victimhood over everything.

These kids' parents and grandparents killed off Western culture, so this is what we're left with.

Go to the chronicle of higher ed website sometime and check out the comments.
It is the purpose of many of these SJW's to reform society until it looks like they want it to look. They not only believe that this is the only legitimate purpose of a university education, they believe that anything the taxpayers have to shell out to pay for this is worth it. You should be grateful to them. To oppose their agenda is an act of ignorance, wickedness, or both. They represent the future the way the nazis represented the German volk.

"systemic racism" is a term used by people who can't point to any, you know, actual racism. What it really means is "inequality," but they prefer to cast it in terms of "racism" in order to prey upon guilty white liberals. It's much more effective than saying, "Yale is full of rich kids and the poor black kids feel out of place because they don't have any money."

Therm "witch hunt' is often used incorrectly to mean a search for that which does not exist. In fact, in a real seventeenth century witch hunt, a witch was always found.
Once the witch was found, the cruel nature of the witch hunt demanded that the witch be tortured until he or she either confessed or died. If the witch confessed, and later retracted the confession, he or she would be found guilty of perjury, and the penalty for perjury was, of course, death.
The first response of liberals to accusations that by making wild accusations of racism they are engaging in a witch hunt is to ask the accuser if they are denying that racism and racists exist . . .

It seems like they are on to us white people now.

Somebody must have lost their secret white privilege card. You know, the one that is a get out of jail free combined with an unlimited credit line that you never have to pay off.

How are we going to get over on people of color now that they know our secret?

I want to know who gave them our secret white privilege PIN number.
