Al Pacino avoided meeting Phil Spector, whom he's portraying in an HBO movie.

"It would have been meeting a different person. Now he’s been convicted and he’s in prison. I play him before his first trial."
After doing the film role, said Pacino, he didn’t feel he knew Spector much better – but that it didn’t matter, because his job was to explore the film character, not the real-life person.
“The play’s the thing,” said Pacino. “I was looking for the truth of the drama.”
It's not an impersonation, but something much deeper.  Or that's the PR for the HBO movie. Maybe it's a preemptive defense against the criticism that he doesn't seem like Spector at all.

ADDED: In other HBO celebrity impersonation news:
HBO’s new Liberace biopic was “too gay” for every studio in Hollywood, director Steven Soderbergh says.
What big name actor will be probing the depths of the truth of the drama of Liberace? Matt Damon? No. Damon's playing Liberace's younger lover. Liberace will be... Michael Douglas!

Aw, give me a break. The studios turned down this movie because it was (whine) too gay? It's obviously insufficiently commercial.
Promos of the film screened for TV critic in Los Angeles yesterday contain numerous scenes of the two male stars shirtless and about to kiss.
No one wants to see that. It's not anti-gay to say I don't want to see that. Who wants to see Michael Douglas shirtless and about to... do anything?

Pacino's version of Phil Spector will be prone to anger and depression.

I don't think it's possible for Hollywood to turn down a movie because its too gay.

The Feds will make grade schoolers watch the Liberace movie to reverse the evils of heteronormativism, once gay marriage is law.

No, not kidding.

Gay PSAs will become common.

I think Pacino may not have wanted to meet Spector, a lunatic.

It was a paycheck, not an homage.

A more interesting Spector may have been the one in Philadelphia a half century ago.

Distinction without difference?

Spector was genuinely talented and had a profound influence on music. But as a human being, he was extremely creepy and uninteresting. Michael Jackson was creepy in an interesting way, but Spector's creepiness was vacuous and overbearing. His demons were sad little creatures....Instead of a straight actor playing and overplaying Liberace, why not hire a gay actor to play him. Why are famous gays always portrayed by straight actors?

"Why are famous gays always portrayed by straight actors?"

It's the Hollywood merit badge.

Other Hollywood merit badges:

Beauty plays the Beast (Charlize Theron).
Going partial or full retard (Sean Penn).
Exposing the evils of corporations (Matt Damon).

I believe you. But your statement is not self-evident; certainly not in the current environment.

Why isn't it "anti-gay"?

Liberace was mining out a strange niche throughout his career, but especially at the end with the 40th (or was it 50th?) Anniversary in Show Business tour (the one where he was collapsing on stage and explaining his severe weight loss as part of a "watermelon diet.") His museum of artifacts and memorabilia in Vegas was shut down a while back, it suffered from a complete lack of interest. Given the age of the bulk of the movie-going public, the distance back in time of his career, this isn't flying because it is too much effort to explain to people today who he was.

All very interesting, but what I need to know is whether Soderbergh will have Michael Douglas say "I wish my brother George was here".

Presumably, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Liberace was too gay. That's why he is not interesting. No one thinks of him as a pianist.

It's all "pro" or "anti" gay all the time.
Is it "pro" or "anti" to just want to stop talking about it all the time?

It's much more likely that Spector had no interest in meeting Pacino than the other way around.

And if that wasn't the case, then I would have gladly stepped in as your Research Assistant, Al.

They were never going to show the real story of Liberace.

As a musician he was totally overrated.

He was a decent pianist but he sucked on the organ.
