"How T-Plush and Two Wallbanging MVP Candidates Are Mixing a Strange Brew in Milwaukee."

The Milwaukee Brewers get a Sports Illustrated cover story (for the first time since 1987). Excerpts:
  • "He has brought silliness back to baseball." (general manager Doug Melvin on [Nyjer] Morgan)
  • "In a sport populated by cardboard personalities, Morgan carries on conversations with fans both supportive and hostile, often between pitches (Fan: 'You're horses---.' Morgan: 'Thank you for supporting your local hero.')"
  • "All teams have customized handshakes. . . but the Brewers have customized handshakes with their security guards."
  • "The Brewers irritate some traditionalists - or as Morgan calls them 'plain-Jane wonderbreads.' "
  • "Still (LaTroy) Hawkins reminds Morgan to read tweets three times before sending them. (Ron) Roenicke meets with him regularly to clarify rules. The team does have rules."

Nice cover story about fun in baseball.

The races are heating up with 5 weeks to go.

The Braves await the Strange Brew in the playoffs.

Wrong time to get hot.

The Giants still await.

As a Cleveland Indians fan, I am now forced to hate the Brewers — because they are the small market team doing what Cleveland is supposed to be doing.

The Brewers missed a chance to honor their history by not having the old heros of Harvey's Wallbangers as the coachs and managers of the team. They have a rich history of being drunken idoits and should have built on that. Hey I would root for them as my National League team if they drank like Stormin Gorman used to and have a bunch of carousers.

I mean the Yankees will still steal your best free agents but that's only right. But you guys could really be fun runner ups like the Washington Generals or something like that there.

Oh and Carol Herman is a moron.

I like the compulsion in WI to have their teams filled with characters and good guys, not lime those Goliath teams from the Coasts. "our teams have good guys, not like those other jerks." Even when it turns out to be wrong, it stillakes is feel righteous.

The Braves are getting nervous, and the Yanks will not be in the Series.

SI cover story?! Don't get too excited, there goes the season.

Races heating up? NL west seems like the only race that matters.

Life long Cub fan but have lived in the Milwaukee area long enough to be able to cheer for the Brewers. I think it would be good for he city in these tough times. They'll win th division, but defense is their Achilles' heel...hope it doesn't hurt them in the playoffs.

MONEYBALL is going to be made into a movie. It's the story of a (poor) team. Who had to work together. No one was hired whose skill was "stealing bases."

But if you put together a team, you could win over the Yankees approach of outspending.

Fear the Beer!

New manager is mixing the chemistry...right amount of cool and brings the heat when the team needs to see him out there working for them.

If the Brewers go to the World Series not only will they have a 4 out of 7 home field advantage.. The Brewers will have a ridiculous advantage of winning 3 out of every 4 home season games.

As a RedSox, I would want to face those odds.

I mean I would NOT want to face those odds.

Have fun now. The Phillies are waiting for October.

It's all good as long as you win, it's not good @ all if you lose.

And, typical of SI and virtually all publications, they glorify the hitters. 80% of baseball is pitching. The Brewers pretty much stood pat w/ their regular lineup, Attanasio[good dago and former Yankee fan] went out and got pitching. The pitchers should be on the cover.

Oh, I forgot..Carol Herman is an idiot.

Eh. I grew up in Milwaukee, but now live in Minneapolis and am a Twinkies fan. I fear the Brew Crew will suffer the same fate as our white-bread teams: a wonderful regular season, and road kill in the playoffs. The magic of Lambeau and the Green and Gold Nation are not available to them.

If the Brewers make a run, I will enjoy watching it. But I can't get really enthused about a sport whose revenue structure is so fucked up.

Trooper York said...

What are you a Communist Original Mike?

The only reason why Green Bay has a team is because Wellington Mara was an moron.

Not as big a moron as Carol Herman though.

I like reading about the Brewers, and I know some die-hard fans -- my Aunt's cousin, for example -- must be deliriously happy. Not a huge fan though.

But still...Go Milwaukee! It's always nice when something unexpected happens in the season. Bury St. Louis and their whiny whiny manager.

One thing we can agree on.

Everybody hates Tony La Russa.
