The image of Wisconsin as a clenched fist.

Lots of Facebook folk actually use this in the spot where most people put a picture of their own faces, so it's not just that the state is turned into a fist. People are willingly replacing their own faces with a fist.

By the way, if Door County were included the fist would have an extended pinky. That would be more polite.

IN THE COMMENTS: Phil 3:14 says:
And appropriately Madison lies over the "capitate" bone.

(And stretching this a bit, and assuming Milwaukee is Democratic, they're "pissed" over the pisiform.)

Door County's all Chicago tourists anyway, isn't it? Would that pinky have a ring on it?

Titus must be really happy now that fisting is the state motto.

Unfortunately, the "fist" represents homosexual "safe sex." Or does it need a condom on top?

Without the "visual" people have learned that the unions were thugs. Still stuck on using violence to terrify businesses ... back in the old days.

Could there be a worse symbol picked?

It isn't a fist. It's a grasping, clutching, wrenching hand.

And if the UP were part of Wisconsin like it should be, the hand would be making a yakkety-yakkety-yak gesture. That would be fitting.

Jokes about skin color and sex aside.., the clenched, upraised fist is a pretty explicit threat. (It is not, of course, a legal threat since here not directed at a particular person.)

But why on earth do government-employee unions choose to use such a brutish image as their symbol? It isn't as though they actually have superior numbers or superior force. Is this just intended to indicate that they will try to harm anyone who opposes them? Can anyone explain the thinking behind this symbol?

Peter V. Bella said...

Man oh man. When will these people get creative? I thought there were intelligent people living up there.

The 1960s and Black Power are so over. Can't they even come up with a new symbol of their own?

Yep, America is dumbed down.

I know this is probably a well-beaten dead equine, but how is an upraised, clenched fist non-violent? If it were truly progressive, it would have a better manicure and the fingers would all be worried about thumb diversity.

Oh, don't worry. A lot of people have another version of this fist: fire-engine red with a black background. I think that one is meant to be taken even *more* seriously.

If the hand were just outstretched, it would be so much more appropriate.

It reminds them of the good old days, when they could openly proclaim what a pack of fascists they are.

Hmmm ... Isn't Wisconsin famous for its butter?

Why didn't they just go straight to an image of the "goatse" guy? (Chip Ahoy, please don't Photoshop that in!)

Reserve judgement on that until after we see what the Obamajungen, er, youth conservationist organization's salute looks like.

How does a fist represent Solidarity, which is showing support for your neighbour? Wouldn't arms be more apposite -- arms can hug, after all. Or how about a La-Z-Boy? The protesters' dogs must be barking. Here friend, take a load off!

Of course, upraised fists have the requisite amount of Black Power-John Carlos hard coded unto the image, so caucasians can feel less guilty using it to represent their lilly-white membership.

Cheers,
Victoria

Remember Mimal? The elf made from Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana? Illinois kind of looks like his arm, and now Wisconsin can be his fist. He can be the posterchild of Union solidarity. You know, since beastly women who look like Mitch Hedberg aren't quite cutting it.

Heh. That's so genius.

Please note that Oshkosh means "claw" in local indian parlance -- and a claw is so much representative of these protesters.

I think it would be really funny if Meade secretly tripped one of these old fuckers and you guys captured it all on film!!!

I guarantee their signs will say really stupid things like "I need this walker, but I don't need Scott Walker."

There will be plenty to mock, I'm sure it won't disappoint!

How many will know what they're protesting?

I mean, how many nursing homes are union-staffed?

The raised pinky is perfect for Door County, which is becoming an enclave for wine and cheese liberals who have more money than sense.

I can visualize, but not execute, a great graphic. You are the man who can do this Palladian.

Carol_Herman said...

What if you wanted to "tamper" with this artwork, and you stuck the ends of a dollar bill at both ends of the clenched fist?

Okay. Use a bigger denomination. It's the "fist" the unions are making! Obama's not involved. (He's characteristically NOT involved, anyway.) But he is sending in Tomahawks to Libya. What if, ahead, you get "visuals" of Libyans, who were terrified to come out, suddenly discovering they can mingle with each other? What if the troops that come in (even if under the UN umbrella), get the Americans greeted as liberators?

Did you know when Mussolini got taken out, it was the American troops that had all the Italian women coming out and throwing flowers on them. Dancing in the streets!

Those visuals are what's being attempted by the tossing in of Tomahawks. What? You're going to scream "anti-war?" How did the right get to be so nuts?

Given the fist, how about an Oroboros-esque concept?

Take the image we're looking at. Zoom out until it's just a fingernail or blemish on a much bigger fist of a fetus (labeled public union) clutching an umbilical cord leading to a mother (labeled Wisconsin taxpayers).

Smile when you say that, moron. Those people shouldn't be victimized like that, but it's a perfect example of the great "compassion" your side keeps telling everyone it has a corner on.

Lukedog ignores the obvious. That many of us, including Meadhouse are over 60 -- that is "seniors".

Why doesn't Meadhouse have as much right to be there as any other senior.

A fair question, I once was at a protest where a busload of senior citizens showed up to protest Medicare “cuts” and when I talked to one of the protesters, I learned that she and the others had been offered a free bus ride to one of the casinos at an Indian reservation if they agreed to show up at the protest for 45 minutes.

While I find many of the comments humorous, I think portraying Wisconsin in that manner is appalling. Does their cause now supersede all other qualities of the Badger State?
