Could there be less of a man than Jeremy Olson, who not only would throw a tomato at a woman (Sarah Palin)... but would also miss... and hit a cop?

It happened in Minnesota.

Looks like he has fetal alcohol syndrome, which would mean his mother was an alcoholic, which would explain why he throws objects at forceful, appealing women whom he doesn't even know. Sort of an Andrew Sullivan syndrome--obsessed with hating a stranger as a stand-in for his feelings about his own mother.

The crux of the Pro-Palin and the Anti-Palin positions is the divide between the traditional American willingness to fight for one another against destructive forces , and a European derived Real-politic that values a plan to get the most of the spoil after the others are annihilated. Sullivan, Hitchens, and many other commentators from a European viewpoint will never believe that any one but a fool could act like a Sarah Palin and fight for her neighbors, instead of for her own social class group, as Americans learned to do on the frontier... and like Sarah Palin did in Alaska, the last frontier.

John said...

"In Hitch's piece it's revealed that one of Palin's current advisers is an anti-Semite by the name of Fred Malek."

Outrage over anti-semitism from the same people who engage in disinvestment campaigns against Israel. The left is rank with anti-semetism. Hello pot this is the kettle calling.

As far as this guy throwing a tomato, this is who liberals are. This is what they do. They have been doing this for years on college campuses. They throw things. They shout down and scream racist at anyone who disagrees with them. This guy is a typical liberal. He is everything they have been since the late 60s.

LoafingOaf said...

While we're answering this, we should also answer Christopher Hitchens' question about Sarah Palin from his Slate piece yesterday, where he asked if there is anything more "cowardly and contemptible" than Sarah Palin's "second-hand, third-rate innuendo-mongering".

That was in response to Sarah Palin encouraging her fans to buy into the birther conspiracy theory, and encouraging her fans to disbelieve President Obama is an American.

In Hitch's piece it's revealed that one of Palin's current advisers is an anti-Semite by the name of Fred Malek. Malek is "the man who drew up a list of Jews to be fired from the civil service under the Nixon administration."

Why is Palin palling around with filthy racists? (Is it true the ghost writer of her book once co-authored a book with a white supremacist, as I have seen alleged in both the blogosphere and on Meet the Press?)

Hitch continues about Sarah Palin's racist pal and adviser, Fred Malek:

It beats me why such a disgusting character is still received in polite circles, except that now at least he's back doing the sort of task to which he is best-suited. He has found an unscrupulous and uncultured political neophyte who will happily act as a megaphone for any kind of libel and insinuation—Obama's "palling around with terrorists" was, I suppose, the money shot of the last campaign—and then later revise and extend her remarks. Nasty work if you can get it. Malek, now so near old age, must be pinching himself at his good fortune.

At least Richard Nixon had the ill fortune to look like what he was: a haunted scoundrel and repressed psychopath. Whereas the usefulness of Sarah Palin to the right-wing party managers is that she combines a certain knowingness with a feigned innocence and a still-palpable blush of sex. But she should take care to read her Alexander Pope: That bloom will soon enough fade, and it will fade really quickly if she uses it to prostitute herself to the Nixonites on one day and then to cock-tease the rabble on the next.

I guess it's not hard to understand someone fantasizing about pelting her with rotten tomatoes. I don't - I'm too busy laughing at Palin. But Palin is a nasty extremist, and that'll get her strong reactions of all sorts.

But, of course, actually trying to do so is criminal and wrong. And trying to do so, missing, and hitting a cop, is pathetic.

Nice of Althouse to help make sure it will follow Jeremy Olson around the rest of his life, whenever anyone Googles his name. lol And good luck to Jeremy Olson on finding employment in the 17% unemployment Obama economy with these criminal charges on his record.

Sarah Palin quit her governorship. I'd say it's easier to improve your poll ratings when you do not have any actual government leadership responsibilities and are in the middle of a book tour where a whole media team is working hard to hype you in order to sell a product.

Do you always use polls to "prove" you're right about something or someone? The last poll that was of any real significance on Obama was on election day 2008, when most Americans voted for him.

BTW, Ronald Reagan's poll ratings went down in his first year as well. Reagan, like Obama, was handed quite a mess from a previous administration.

He says much of the image she hyped about herself is a bunch of lies. He also met with Andrew Sullivan in the green room and they had an off-the-record chat that Sullivan describes as "fascinating". Now that Andrew Sullivan and Levi Johnston are friendly acquaintances, it will be interesting to see what Levi reveals to Andrew down the line and on the record.

Is this the Fred Malek who is being talked about? Because if so, calling him "anti-Semitic" on the basis of the following...

In 1971, Richard Nixon became convinced the Bureau of Labor Statistics had come under the control of Democratic rivals and what Nixon termed a "Jewish cabal." He instructed aides Charles Colson and H. R. Haldeman to identify a list of Democrats and "important Jewish officials" at the agency.[5]

Malek provided the data on Democrats after a check of voter registration rolls, but balked at fulfilling the rest of Nixon's query. "I refused four times. The fifth time he came back and gave me a direct order through Haldeman, so I gave him a number. I regret my compliance. It was a mistake."[6] Two months after he sent the list, two of the officials on it were reassigned to "less visible jobs" within the Labor Dept.[7] Slate columnist Timothy Noah, however, asserts that a September 8, 1971 memo from Malek to Haldeman appears to contradict Malek's assertions of limited involvement, in which Malek states he has recommended to the Secretary of Labor "fairly drastic moves" including the "compromise" reassignment of three officials.[5]

Seymour D. Reich, chairman of Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations during the 1990s, said "Malek made a mistake 18 years ago when he agreed to a regrettable request by President Nixon." But he added, Malek "has taken pains to assure the Jewish community that he realizes his error and that he intended no harm. I believe he is sincere."[8]

...seems rather a stretch. If anything, the anti-Semitism all seems to be on Nixon's part, not Malek's, and in fact he protested against the order and was sorry he cooperated at all. But I'm sure our leftist knowitalls know better what is "anti-Semitism" and what isn't. I mean, if you can't believe a scurrilous nun-hating drunkard like Hitchens, who can you believe?

LoafingOaf said...

Look how unconcerned you all are that Sarah Palin pals around with anti-Semites like Fred Malek.

(Last week Sarah Palin publicly encouraged people to buy into the birther conspiracy theories about President Obama.)

So is Levi telling Andrew that he really IS the father of Trig? That he really ISN'T the father of Tripp? What could Levi possibly say that isn't self-serving? I'm supposed to discount Sarah Palin's book as totally self-serving fluff, but Levi is a fount of knowledge?

By this standard, the cocktail waitress in Las Vegas knows the "real" Tiger Woods.

I don't know if Sarah would be a good president; first she would have to survive the Republican primary. Her personal life has been way too distracting from anything meaningful she would have to say. And I don't discount the criticism of associating with these controversial characters you bring up.

But then, I should believe that Obama can lead this country well despite all the questionable characters he's palled around with, from Jeremiah Wright to Van Jones to Anita Dunn. I guess I'll worry about Sarah's ghost writer when she's questioned about it and says she wants him to be White House Communications Director.

TMink said...

The claims of Malek being an anti-semite are a concern to me. So I tried to find some good info on it. It is clear that Malek got Jewish sounding names from the Department of Labor Statistics for Nixon and that Nixon had those people fired or reassigned. I read that Malek protested the assignment and said he regreted complying.

Honestly, I do not think that is enough, he sould have quit.

But then my concern is tempered by reading that Hitch is involved as Hitch is an anti-Christian and Palin is famously or perhaps infamously Christian.

Then there is this quote from HuffPo: "During the embryonic days of Watergate in the early 1970s, Malek served as a special assistant to Nixon in his corrupt bid for re-election, where he palled around with the likes of real terrorists, including H. R. Haldeman, John Erlichman, Charles Colson and E. Howard Hunt."

Right, those jerks were terrorists. So it is impossible for me to get too worked up about these claims because of the people who are making them. They are not trustworthy.

Still, if I were Palin, I would dump him. She is, like most Evangelicals, very pro-Israel and should not hang with someone who participated in what was really a dastardly act.

Or, why don't you explain why it's "reasonable" to demand Palin prove she's the mother of Trig and "unreasonable" to demand Obama prove he was born in America. Aren't both groups "just asking questions?"

Sure. I would think its obvious, but for the slower people, I will give it a shot.

Palin- was pregnant, gave birth. Pretty simple.

Obama- born in America, will not provide birth certificate for unknown reasons.

And since one of the requirements to hold his job is to be born in American, even delusional people have a valid reason for requesting proof.

In your mind, how are the two of them connected?

If memory serves, and that's because I stopped reading The Atlantic years ago, Sullivan holds the belief that Trig is really the spawn of Palin's teenage daughter? Is Sullivan aware that the rate of down syndrom births for women under 30 years old is something south of less than 1 in 1000 births?

Whatever his feelings of Sarah Palin, that is not exactly the wagon I'd hitch my horse to. Unless of course I wanted to confirm the consensus that I was a complete loon.

Tomatoes can be pretty expensive this time of year. Of course if Jeremy really wanted to show off, he could have thrown a Haas Avocado. Those things are really pricey. If he threw tomatoes, avocados, limes and some green onions we could have guacamole.

Water breaking for me meant: clean the bathroom and kitchen, and put the final touches on the baby's room.

I didn't go into the hospital until the next day and even then was in mild labor (contractions about every half hour or less) for at least 12 hours before getting down to business.

We were bored and we played cribbage and trivial pursuit for quite a bit of the time. The worst thing was that they wouldn't let me eat and I was HUNGRY!!!!

So taking a plane ride home to near family and your personal physician is not strange at all.

Brian said...

The average woman, who's a mother for the 1st time, might rush to the hospital at soon as her water breaks, only to be sent home and told to wait for the contractions to get closer together. Which, as DBQ says, can be days later. Of course, once in the hospital, they can induce labor, but they don't like to do that unless there's a reason to do so.

But a mother of four might be experienced enough to know what the contractions should feel like when she's ready to give birth.

I haven't read Sarah's book yet. Anybody know whether or not she had her water break, and she called her doctor, and he said "go to the hospital when the contractions get under 10 minutes apart."

I chuckled at a story (the details of where I heard it escape me now) I told my wife about a dad who was at work, and his wife was in pre-labor at home, and he was asked why wasn't he home with her, and he said "oh, the contractions are still only 10 minutes apart."

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Yes. Me too. I try not to be abusive, but this stupid argument and charge that Palin is somehow not telling the truth about the birth of her child because of the sheer ignorance of the posters, just gets my goat.

First of all. The men who are making these statements haven't got a clue about childbirth.

And secondly, all women are different in how they approach things like childbirth in the timing, severity of contractions or the time in labor.

And LASTLY...who knows more about their own body. The woman who is in childbirth and who has given birth more than one time? OR some gay guy who thinks women are some sort of alien race, or doofus men who keep bleating out the same ridiculous statements and making facile judgements about something that they have no knowledge of.

Ya betcha....I'm talking about you, garage.

This whole thing is off topic, but let me see if I can get this straight:

Sullivan has long been of the view that Sara Palin is crazy. Ms. Palin took a (to some people's view)crazy risk by flying home after her water broke. So rather than this proving the "she is crazy" thesis, Sullivan instead doubts that Palin was pregnant at all?

How is this not crazy? For Sullivan I mean.

As I understand it, Palin's co-author is also an anti-semite, because he once co-wrote a book with Stacy Mcain, who is an anti-semite because during his decades long career as a journalist he once interviewed an anti-semite for a story.

....this would be so much easier if the left just declared Kevin Bacon a racist.

Since you don't even know that Palin's ghost writer is a female, I doubt you looked into the allegations much before deciding, "I'll just go along with whatever the right-wing blogosphere is claiming, as usual".

I did not say I know for a fact that Robert Stacy McCain is a racist. But you ought to be careful who you're vouching for.

For example, McCain allegedly said this:

"As Steffgen predicted, the media now force interracial images into the public mind and a number of perfectly rational people react to these images with an altogether natural revulsion. The white person who does not mind transacting business with a black bank clerk may yet be averse to accepting the clerk as his sisterinlaw, and THIS IS NOT RACISM, no matter what Madison Avenue, Hollywood and Washington tell us."

One of the more honest right-wing bloggers, Patterico, is trying to get Robert Stacy McCain to answer a straight question about that quote, but McCain refuses.

Another example: Robert Stacy McCain allegedly wrote for a racist web site called American Rennaissance under the pseudonym Burke C. Dabney (a Confederate army chaplain and supporter of slavery). Here's a quote he allegedly wrote: "If crusaders against teenage motherhood were serious, they would concentrate on the black and Hispanic girls who account for more than half of teenage births. Targeting whites as part of a general campaign is yet another form of racial suicide."

If you get to the bottom of stuff like that and decide you can still vouch for Robert Stacy McCain, then fine. But if you ignore it and vouch for McCain just because InstaPundit and other right-wing bloggers link to McCain, you may find out you're vouching for somone before you know what he's really about.

I don't know if McCain is a racist. He seems to be, but I'll await further evidence and for now say that there's enough to be very wary of him.
