In search of a Free Society.

Here's a list of 17 demands presented in a leaflet that was distributed at the protests outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention, as reported by Norman Mailer in "Miami and the Siege of Chicago: An Informal History of the Republican and Democratic Conventions of 1968." Boldface mine:
1. An immediate end to the War in Vietnam….

2. Immediate freedom for Huey Newton of the Black Panthers and all other black people. Adoption of the community control concept in our ghetto areas….

3. The legalization of marihuana and all other psychedelic drugs….

4. A prison system based on the concept of rehabilitation rather than punishment.

5.…abolition of all laws related to crimes without victims. That is, retention only of laws relating to crimes in which there is an unwilling injured party, i.e. murder, rape, assault.

6. The total disarmament of all the people beginning with the police. This includes not only guns, but such brutal devices as tear gas, MACE, electric prods, blackjacks, billy clubs, and the like.

7. The Abolition of Money. The abolition of pay housing, pay media, pay transportation, pay food, pay education, pay clothing, pay medical help, and pay toilets.

8. A society which works toward and actively promotes the concept of “full unemployment.” A society in which people are free from the drudgery of work. Adoption of the concept “Let the Machines do it.”

9.…elimination of pollution from our air and water.

10.…incentives for the decentralization of our crowded cities…encourage rural living.

11.…free birth control information…abortions when desired.

12. A restructured educational system which provides the student power to determine his course of study and allows for student participation in over-all policy planning….

13. Open and free use of media…cable television as a method of increasing the selection of channels available to the viewer.

14. An end to all censorship. We are sick of a society which has no hesitation about showing people committing violence and refuses to show a couple fucking.

15. We believe that people should fuck all the time, anytime, whomever they wish. This is not a program to demand but a simple recognition of the reality around us.

16.…a national referendum system conducted via television or a telephone voting system…a decentralization of power and authority with many varied tribal groups. Groups in which people exist in a state of basic trust and are free to choose their tribe.

17. A program that encourages and promotes the arts. However, we feel that if the Free Society we envision were to be fought for and achieved, all of us would actualize the creativity within us. In a very real sense we would have a society in which every man would be an artist.
ADDED: Googling some text, I find testimony from Abbie Hoffman (at the Chicago 7 trial) claiming authorship of the list:
I will read it in the order that I wrote it. "Revolution toward a free society, Yippie, by A. Yippie.
There was a #18 on the list:
And eighteen was left blank for anybody to fill in what they wanted. "It was for these reasons that we had come to Chicago, it was for these reasons that many of us may fight and die here. We recognize this as the vision of the founders of this nation. We recognize that we are America; we recognize that we are free men. The present-day politicians and their armies of automatons have selfishly robbed us of our birthright. The evilness they stand for will go unchallenged no longer. Political pigs, your days are numbered. We are the second American Revolution. We shall win."

Damn it's hard to be amused by socialist-loving Lefties, even when they should otherwise seem funny and good spirited. You always have to remember that these are the same people who supported Stalin, who supported Che, who supported the Viet Cong, you know?
I dunno, that brand of naivete should be cute, but it always seems to help out the very worst people--real monsters.

How are things in Venezuela, anyway? I haven't heard from Sean Penn lately.

I feel compelled to comment. While I was, in my naive youth, a part of The Movement, I don't recall such a ridiculous manifesto as that one. There were a lot of older Movement trolls who exploited the 'free sex and drugs' theme and more than a few communists, as David Horowitz recalls in his Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey. Good reasons all to indulge the young their protests but don't let them lead the country.

Speaking of Trump, though: why doesn't Trump make "decriminalize marijuana" a campaign theme? If he got there first it'd have to help, no?

I appreciate a well thought out, coherent plan for America. I was born in 1951. This list is actually better than the "Like wow, man. Let's like get high, man" that was the mantra of many in Madison in that era.

For my own part:

In some of my songs I have casually mentioned
The fact that I like to drink beer
This little song is more to the point
Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears

I like beer it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer it helps me unwind
And sometimes it makes me feel mellow
(Makes him feel mellow)

Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much
Vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain
As a matter of fact I like beer
(He likes beer)

My wife often frowns when we're out on the town
And I'm wearing a suit and a tie
She's sipping vermouth and she thinks I'm uncouth
When I yell as the waiter goes by

I like beer it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer it helps me unwind
And sometimes it makes me feel mellow
(Makes him feel mellow)

Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much
Vodka puts my mouth in gear
Well this little refrain should help me explain
As a matter of fact I like beer
(He likes beer)

Last night I dreamed that I passed from the scene
And I went to a place so sublime
Oh, the water was clear and tasted like beer
Then they turned it all into wine

I like beer it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer it helps me unwind
Sometimes it makes me feel mellow
(Makes him feel mellow)

Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much
And vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain
As a matter of fact I like beer
(Yes he likes beer)

The Hippies were batshit crazy -- they wrecked a lotta lives. Not just many of their own - but look at their parents, wives and kids. Many of those family bonds were just destroyed. Timothy Leary's wife was driven to suicide by his "open" marriage, and William S Burroughs murdered his fiance.

Abbie Hoffman? suicide age 52.

Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison? drug OD's in their 20s.

They're music was good, and they had a few kernels of good ideas, sprinkled among their silliness, but ultimately it was self-destructive nonsense. They wanted sex, they wanted free stuff -- but most importantly they wanted to avoid any of the hard work, sacrifice, patience and tenacity that leads to those good things.

Not hilarious. This is exactly what's happening now in places like Baltimore and Chicago. Officers are resigning and not being replaced. Crime-prone neighborhoods are not being patrolled for fear of BLM reactions to violent confrontations with armed criminals.

Looking at this makes me not even want to bother with learning. But wait, who would run the TVs, increase selection of channels, work the hospitals, build the houses, run the elections, run all the free things, be artists? Let the people who are intrinsically motivated work to let the others fuck and get free stuff!

This is one messed up utopia. Also, in a utopia, can artists actually produce meaningful art?

When I think of meaningful socialist/communist art, I think of Shostakovich 5. Disappearing artists create so much stress as to produce epic works of art out of the exceptionally talented. Go to school! Be an artist! Be a lemming!

Classic Marxist view of society after the "state has withered away". The New Left Yippies just didn't think that there ever needed to be a dictatorship of the proletariat to get to that withered state.

When you look at that list you see why the Old Commie & hard socialist Left loathed the New Left, especially in its Yippie/Counterculture manifestations, & vice versa. Lenin would not have been pleased with most of that list.

Many of them continue to wreck lives. They control the humanities departments of many universities where they hammer their bullshit into the ill-educated brains of far too many students.

Hippie culture is the bastard child of fascism and communism, and like those twin blights on Western civilization, continues to be taught and idolized in spite of errant nonsense that is its foundation. And like its parents continues to do damage and ruin lives in spite of being discredited at every turn. Aristotle thought that evil derived from ignorance, that an enlightened person would naturally seek the Good because the Good is demonstrably in his interest. The fly in that ointment is the teacher who in order to uphold his own sense of moral superiority teaches falsehoods to the young and impressionable.

It bothers me because it puts black lives above others' lives. This question was even posed at a Dem primary debate early on: "Which is it, Black lives matter or All lives matter?" Hillary insisted that "Black Lives Matter" trumps "All Lives Matter." A more stupid, polarizing question could not have been framed.

A much better question -- one which would be the difference between acceptance and rejection would be "Black Lives Matter Too"

I started wondering whatever happened to some of the hippies of '68. I knew that Jerry Rubin had gotten a haircut, put on a coat and tie, and gotten filthy rich as a stockbroker. And I knew that Tom Hayden went into politics and married Jane Fonda. Turns out Rubin died jaywalking across Wilshire Blvd (six lanes) in front of his penthouse apartment. Wikipedia says Hayden now ekes out a living (/snark) writing books and teaching at second tier schools like Harvard and UCLA.

Turns out that Abby Hoffman committed suicide by swallowing phenobarbital tablets washed down with booze. He was living in an apartment that had been built from a turkey coop.

David Dellinger was a relatively old man of 53 in '68. As near as I can tell the Chicago 7 trial was the high water mark of his social activism. Ditto Rennie Davis, except that Davis was only in his twenties in '68.

John Froines and Lee Weiner snuck off into academia after the trial. It didn't provide much of a refuge for Weiner, who managed to get himself fired from Rutgers after a remark about starting a Communist party on campus. After the trial Froines taught chemistry at Goddard College, then took a position as Director for the Office of Toxic Substances at OSHA, then to the faculty of UCLA.

Bobby Seale went to jail and later was put on trial for murder. He beat that rap.

Huey Newton was already in jail in '68, after being found guilty of murdering a cop. Like Seale he appears to have continued to embrace violence and later went on trial for murdering a woman who called him by a hated childhood nickname. After an assassination attempt on a critical witness, the witness developed a convenient case of amnesia about the events of the events in question and he walked. Newton eventually received a Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara but he would die from gunshot wounds due to a violent split between the Panthers and another Black gang.

This was the tweet I saw elsewhere. I deleted my original comment above to edit it but didn't feel like posting it back where I said why that phrase bothers me. I see some of you commented on it.

Did anybody watch Kelly file? She had the rally organizer from Dallas protests, some white dude, calls himself Rev Jeff Hood. She showed a clip of him before the shooting, inciting the crowd with his rhetoric and he said 'let me invoke our favorite preacher' and whom do you think he was referring to? I waited for Martin Luther King but he said (wait for it) Jeremiah Wright and repeated that guy's famous Goddamn white America and he went on like that for a few minutes talking to the crowd. Kelly challenged him but not strongly enough and he changed his tone and reframed what he said at the rally as being only opposed to white domination, blah, blah. Who is funding this motherfucker, I want to know. This BLM nonsense is organized, well funded and it does not bode well for the country. I see these thugs on TV running it and it is quite scary because these people will do anything for money and notoriety. They are professional protesters among other things. They are not problem solvers by any stretch of the imagination.

I found interesting the demand for decentralization. As others above have pointed out, the left now demands centralization. I was thinking that BLM and the increasing inner city violence makes living in a more rural environment that much more attractive. 15. We believe that people should fuck all the time, anytime, whomever they wish. This is not a program to demand but a simple recognition of the reality around us.

I think that this is an indication that the list was made up primarily by guys. Or that the women involved were stoned all the time. This gets to the basic differences between males and females, and esp in their sexual strategies. And a lot of that revolves around the big differences between the resources invested in having babies. The males expend a quarter ounce or so of fluid that they can rapidly replace and maybe 15 minutes of work, while the females spend nine months hauling the developing baby around in their bellies, then nursing them after birth. Males have been known to have had over a thousand offspring, while the outer limit for females is maybe 20 over their lifetimes. So, it pays females much more in evolutionary terms to be selective with whom they have sex.

Taking this demand to its logical conclusion, it would mean that the guys would be lined up to have sex with the hottest gals, keeping them busy in bed 24/7. And, since contraception isn't 100% effective, that would mean that the females wouldn't have any control over who the fathers of their children were. What about STDs? This was before the AIDS, so this aspect of having too much indiscriminate sex was not as evident as it is (hopefully) today. Still, you can't kill all STDs with antibiotics, and you are stuck with some of them for life. Can you refuse sex because the other party has an STD? Or has had sex with enough skanky women (or men) that are likely to?

Their goals haven't really changed much. Well, except for 10, 14, and 17. Sad how much the Leftist radical activists thoroughly run the DNC.

Let the cops leave them to their own devices and kill each other.

I can appreciate that mentality, but there would be a lot of innocents in those shitty ghettos who don't want that.

Many of them continue to wreck lives. They control the humanities departments of many universities where they hammer their bullshit into the ill-educated brains of far too many students.

They also block anybody not of the far Left from employment as a professor and make tenure impossible for conservatives, who actually might need the protection for their "unpopular" (amongst the intelligentsia, not the populace) research.

When I win the 500 million this weekend (Which will actually be more like 200 million after taxes and one time pay out) I'm going to build a community on an island somewhere and invite all of these people to come and live there.

Lump-sum --- you'd get about 1/3 after taxes.

Still, $166M ain't too bad.

This was a year before the women's lib and gay rights movements got going, and the invention of the "Hispanic," all of which would see the dudes who wrote this as their oppressors. Like the French Revolution, everyone was eventually led to the guillotine.

Exactly! And we still are.

How did anyone take these people seriously? Who did they think was going to provide all this free stuff?

Without having to read Mailer's book, I would like to know the authorship of the leaflet. While some of the points were definitely part of the demands of the Movement, others were not. Can anyone here enlighten me?

I just read the addendum stating that Abbie Hoffman was the author. While Hoffman was a darling of the media, he was nothing more than an anti-establishment clown and not a real revolutionary.

I was 15 then and likely agreed with every item on that list. Hell, maybe I wrote it.
