Happy Christmas!

Very early morning. Looking at yesterday's photographs. We walked up to the Wisconsin Capitol to take a look at our state Christmas tree:

The ornaments are made by schoolchildren...

... who seem to have been instructed that the theme this year is sports.

Have you gone English on us? :)

How did "merry" ever get started? Seems like the wrong word, like transitory silliness.

Badger basketball will never be the same without the great Bo Ryan.

But best of luck to his handpicked successor.

A nice tree in a nice location. Even this sports Philistine appreciates the implementation and the intent.

Merry Christmas.

Can you in your Conscience think, that our Holy Savior is honoured by Mad Mirth, by long Eating, by hard Drinking, by lewd Gaming, by rude Revelling?

Madison is the home of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, but this issue is easily resolved as a matter of free speech and the problem of viewpoint discrimination. It's a free-speech forum, and the children are doing their own speech. I think the biggest problem here is restricting the subject matter to sports (if that's what happened).

This year I saw a Gene Simmons in full KISS regalia ornament for sale.
And this year, all Americans get a Christmas gift

Maybe Merry Christmas comes from the song "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." An older meaning of the word merry was not to be silly, but secure and content. BTW, an older meaning of silly was to a simple bumpkin.

With all of the complaining about a "War on Christmas" in the conservative media (Fox, Limbaugh and a thousand other conservative talkradio shows), I think the worst abuses of Christmas are surely committed by commercial interests trying to make a buck off the holiday.

Example: I heard the Detroit radio host who is in the three hour time slot before Rush on superstation WJR-AM 760, griping about a school board/principal who wanted to remove a pink Pokemon "Holiday" tree from a school classroom. And yeah, the removal seemed overwrought to me.

But the worst offense, it seemed to me, was the very existence of a pink Pokémon Christmas tree.

In many ways, I'd like to see the War on Christmas extended to much more of the commercial world.

I'm just glad that commerce seems to have so little interest in the real Christian calendar-dates; Lenten season and the Holy Week including Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter.

I like that basketball badger.

We made Yorkshire pudding for the first time yesterday, and I think we've decided to make it every year.

My father liked to make that. I feel like we had rib roast every Sunday, with Yorkshire pudding.
