Raping the man... on "Shameless."

I've been catching up with the TV show "Shameless" and just finished Season 1 last night. There are 3 more seasons, which I intend to watch soon. Please, no spoilers about those later seasons.

I've had things to say about the various episodes in Season 1, which I've posted over at Metafilter's FanFare. At Metafilter, I post under the screen name "Alizaria." My son John, who posts under his real name, writes front-page recaps that set up the space for commenting. I wanted to post over here, in part to let you know that this is a show I'm in the middle of watching and to invite you to watch along with me (and maybe talk about it over at FanFare, where there are posts for all the episodes), but mostly because rape is an ongoing topic on this blog, and the subtopic of women raping men has come up from time to time.

If you are interested in this topic, you might want to read what I have to say in the comments to the Season 1 finale "Father Frank, Full of Grace." Obviously, there are spoilers at that link and in the indented quote below. I'll just say that a male character is raped, with clear evidence of rape.
[Frank] was yelling "no," he was incapacitated by drugs, and Karen was physically pinning him down....

Are we supposed to think this is all very funny because the victim is a man or is the show challenging us to notice? I notice!
ADDED: No spoilers beyond season 1.

There was some old raunchy rom-com where the main character is going without sex for Lent. At the end, he locks himself in his room and ties his hands to keep himself from giving in to temptation. He passes out, only to wake up to find his ex had used her key to break in and have sex with him while he's out of it.

It told me a lot when I was the only one who had been watching to say, "Wait, that's NOT funny." It'll be interesting to see if they treat this as a terrible thing in the show or just a regular thing. I probably won't watch it though, so I'll never know.

I haven't watched Shameless. The two new shows I'm watching lately are The Flash and Empire. I like both.

And of course, now that it's Hollywood Week, I'm starting to pay attention to Idol.

Somebody has to say it: I've watched the British version. It's on Netflix, so I don't need to Pay an extra $8 for Showtime.

It is set in England's Second City, Birmingham. It's very raunchy, but clever. It goes beyond comedy with some very dramatic moments and the characters, however flawed, doing the "right" thing for their family.

There is also a great Australian "RaunchyComedy" (as categorized by NF) in the same spiritn called
"Rake" about a clever (Cleaver?) , yet tragic Sydney
Barrister .

Women who rape willing underage males get far lighter sentences then men that rape willing underage females.

In some cases the rape victim is ordered to pay child support. Long live the patriarchy.

Emmy Rossum has great breasts. Not sure if that is a spoiler or not.

I am Laslo.

About the British version: Can you understand what they are saying without putting on the subtitles?

I like William H. Macy a lot.

Loved when Chloe Webb (AKA Nancy Spungen) showed up.

Ugh. Reading all that makes it sound like an awful show about awful people. Am I missing something?

Yes, it's a great show about awful people. My wife and I have watched it since it started. Sometimes shocking, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Mostly, very poor life choices.

Ann, it's kind of tough - there are some references that I cannot understand and I think it may be made worse by what I think is a "Northern" accent (possibly "Chav" too).

That said, alot can be gleaned by context.

Loved the original British show. It was brilliant.

No real desire to see the U.S. version.

There was a similar episode in "Too Close for Comfort" that confronted the taboo of female rape of men.

Then there was the Baytown Serial Rapist, a black homosexual male who raped white men, presumably for social justice or something. I wonder if his story has been retold on the big or small screen.

An Amazon customer says:

"The UK version of Shameless is an excellent show. I was very happy when I saw that they were making some seasons available on dvd. Unfortunately, this release does not have subtitles. While the cast is speaking English, it is very difficult to understand much of what they are saying due to the dialect. Half the fun is in being able to understand what they are saying. Without subtitles, I can't give this dvd release more than one star. I'm disappointed."

I haven't seen the UK show, but I've often found I need English subtitles for the US show!

Hell no and that's why I stopped watching that version. But I think the set of the British show...their council complex and dingy little apartment, say "poor" better than the US version, with its fairly large, airy house.

But the REAL question is: are you going to watch "Better Call Saul"?

I have watched Shameless since it started and it jumped the shark bigtime last season IMO. I won't give any spoilers but it is no longer a must see for me.

I got the Band of Brothers DVD on netflix and for some reason the subtitles were in Spanish. I now know what maldiciones means in Spanish.
