HuffPo is breathless: "Madonna's 'Living For Love' Video Is The Singer's Best Work In A Decade."

Well, I don't know about that. I watched it...

... I mean, I watched about half of it. And I was trying, forcing myself to put up with it. But I did want to say that I got an important message from this video: That thing of putting a lot of bobby pins in your hair is — if Madonna has her way — back... back with a vengeance. Put bobby pins all over your head, not just to hold the hair back or down, not even just as if they were decorative, but as the perfect expression of your having lost your mind. Bobby pins will not hold your brain, like your hair, in place, but you will look like you are in need of some devices that could bring some order to the head under the hair.

A bit of a low bar isn't it? What else has she done in the last decade?

Meh.

She has managed to make herself look like what Faye Dunaway would look like, if Faye Dunaway had not done this to herself.

What is it with these "performers" and their fascination with images that bring to mind Baphomet? Crikey.

Looks like a Jazzercise video, bullfight-style.

She loses the bobby pins in the second act. Symbolism for bursting free or something like that.

Perhaps the bobby pins are stylistic. It may be that matadors use bobby pins to secure their hair under the hats, or to fasten the hats to their heads.

I also recall flamenco dancers using bobby pins to style their elaborate chignons.

She needed a pair of ciccones hanging down under in those squat thrusts to complete the new look.

The bobby pins help keep her face on during the daylight hours.

At night the face is handed over to a highly-specialized team of plastic surgeons who continue to tighten it like canvas on a drum, then cutting off the extraneous bits like facial labiaplasty.

I am Laslo.

Star to has been, it's got to be tough for Madonna Ciccone.

Who's the effeminate old dude in the bull fighting getup?

I don't hear a hook.

She will never truly be a has been. Her audience is growing old with her. Poor bastards have bonded with her, and they will follow her to the grave.......She's less annoying than in former times. The song and bull dance routine seem more appropriate for a younger singer, but, like Picasso, she seems willing to let the bull of her libido toss around the porcelain of her bones. The fact that she doesn't look completely silly is a testament to her fitness regime and dedication. Also BDSM is kind of banal. Bestiality with dangerous animals is now where the edge is,

Boring.

Compare with "Roar," by Katy Perry.

Same subject, different execution.

Link the pins and wire them to the brain. Presto, an antenna. It could eliminate the earbuds.

Huffpo article reeks of payola.

"Same subject, different execution."

I've now watched half of 2 videos, and I have no idea what the subject is.

Katy Perry seems to be on a theme park ride there. She seems to be singing that she has the eye of a tiger, but we see a tiger (her stupid man is offed by a tiger) and we see lots of sets of eyes that might be tiger eyes. So... the visuals don't match the words. And I really don't know what it means to claim to have the eye of a tiger. I guess: She's a predator? I am tiger, hear me roar, in numbers too big to ignore...

This is your best comment ever as far as making me laugh. Funny stuff.

I'm laughing, too.

Best blog ever.

Althouse can analyze anything, anything, for untested assumptions and bullshit.

Lady, you're 56 years old. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you could evolve a little.

Besides, nothing says "love" like a blood-red Minotaur. Why not develop a thing for Theseus?

The ideas that this is Madonna's best work in a decade, and that you could make it through half of it but not more, are NOT mutually contradictory...

Katy Perry -- What mortal hand or eye could frame her fearful symmetry?

That new Madonna video? Wotta buncha bull!

This is a leaked audition tape for Dancing With the Stars.

The most interesting thing about the video will be in waiting to see if she gets complaints of cultural appropriation the way Katy Perry did for Dark Horse,.

traditionalguy said...

The old burned out Madonna has no human attributes, other than the old way she uses sexual dominance to overpower everything over and over. She is never in any danger. Everything else is in danger from her power.

By contrast Perry shows a real human with a soul that reacts to the dangers of life with love and inner confidence.

Madonna was always about negative push back. Perry is more about pulling forward. And one of them will outlive the other.

Ambrose nails it in the first comment. It's been about ten years since "Sex", hasn't it?

This isn't the first video for her with a bullfighter theme. Take a Bow also used it, albeit with a real bull.

Sex book and Erotica album were 23 years ago.

I fell out of love with Madge after her last album.

This video does not impress this queen.

Rocking body for 56 though.

Not sure why but it reminded me of this.

(I especially like Odysseus's accent.)

I made about halfway through as well.

The bullfight is a good "I'm still standing" visual metaphor for her. She's become quite stiff and doesn't move as much, but it's covered by the cinematography.

I think she's reaching that age where the media are going to start being nicer to her - a la Yoko Ono.

It's gotta be a challenge to flail around trying to stimulate a cultural nerve when the nerve no longer responds.

The first one was a real rush. Every time after was only chasing the rush. Now it's just the morning after littered with cans, bottles, overflowing ash trays, pizza boxes, and vomit.

Lots of vomit.

It's autotuned to bejesus and back, that's all I came away with.

I assume Katy Perry is referencing the song "eye of the tiger" by Survivor used in the Rocky movie.

A line from last week's SNL, talking about past Grammy winners (and remember these are New York people talking):

"Madonna: the only thing that A-Rod can still hit!"
