It discriminates against receding chins and flat noses.
Makes some sense in selecting for more European features among Asian populations.

Goes back to ideas of beauty which came from Greek and Roman statues. They had a nose and chin alignment that that finger method would catch. Also the forehead was supposed to go straight up and down - not overhang or recede. This is what is meant by "regular" as in Tennyson where he describes a heartless, wealthy beauty - "faultily faultless, icily regular, splendidly null."

I tried it. It's easier to pass the test if you smile. That makes sense to me.
