So much for the hot, passionate artist boyfriend type.

Last November we were talking about a nicely done Katy Perry video called "The One That Got Away." Remember?
Don't most rich old ladies regret marrying the dull bastard who got them all their stuff and wish they'd spent their lives with the hot, passionate artist who ran off that one night when they'd had that big fight?

Don't ask me. That's not what I did with my life, but it's a fine old cultural meme — that the wives of rich men are so unhappy and that they wish they'd gone down the other road, the one with all that hot sex and emotional turbulence — and it's pithily realized in Katy Perry's new video "The One That Got Away." (I'm watching this because my son Chris emailed me to say: "I'm not generally a Katy Perry fan, but I think this new video is great and very emotionally effective.")
The One she was talking about was her real-life lost love Johnny Lewis. He's dead now, after a bizarre murderous incident:
Neighbours called police after hearing a woman screaming and witnessing Lewis attack two men with a piece of wood out the front of Davis' property, where the actor was understood to be renting a room.

The other victims - a neighbour and a handyman - were badly beaten after the tussle, which lasted between 3-4 minutes and began when Lewis tried to break into the neighbour's home, according to TMZ.

The men Lewis fought with told officers he showed 'super-human strength' and was 'phenomenally strong.' In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the neighbour said Lewis was hardly deterred by the blows he took, that it was like 'hitting him with a fly swatter.'

Lewis, who dated Perry in 2006 and regularly graced the red carpet with the pop star, then apparently climbed onto the roof. It is unclear whether Lewis jumped or fell to his death.
He got away.

In re... your Dylan fetish.

So, your outlook is that it's better to get the operatic emotion vicariously, while living a pragmatic life?

There's probably some justification for that.

No, no, no. The drama is awful, and anything could happen.

After age 22 or so, I found I always needed a good night's sleep.

How so very sad for everyone involved. Even at this remove.

He killed an old lady. She's the victim.

Weird. In "Sons of Anarchy" Lewis played the most normal and sympathetic member of the biker gang.

My outlook? What do you know of my history of romantic connections?

And I don't accept the dichotomy stated.

Maybe that would explain Ms. Perry's attempt at a dalliance with serial Lothario John Mayer. Trying to get it all.

That's a classic female response.

The romantic part of women, like the romantic part of men is one of the most predictable parts of life. Originality is extremely rare.

Watch porn. We all fall into quite predictable patterns.

That's what I know.

And now, having watched the Katy Perry video, let me just say that I never expected Johnny Cash.

Eh, we've all heard that story a thousand times.

If the Passionate Artist Boyfriend hadn't died, then five years down the road she'd find him in bed with some nubile admirer while she was twenty pounds heavier and covered in baby spitup.

My Passionate Artist Boyfriend, the one that got away, the one whom I adored and thought was my soul mate, recently left his pregnant wife and three young children to become a musical massage therapist and live out of his car.

Dodged a bullet on that one. I appreciate my kind, funny, reliable, deeply principled, mildly boring husband more and more all the time.

But some people need more stimulation and a more dramatic personal life, I guess. I assume Katy Perry is one of them.

Uh oh, he was a scientologist. Sounds like crack is going to have a field day with this one.
Though, was it scientology that killed him, or good old drug addiction? When I first heard of his exploits I thought he might have been on bath salts (especially because of the bizarre violence and superhuman strength) but maybe Smiles gives you the same results without the face eating.

In other news, why the hell are drugs turning
People into super human psychos and cannibals, and why are people taking these drugs knowing the results?

THAT'S where I recognized him from. That was Half Sack.
Seemed like a nice guy at the time.

The problem with passion is that it doesn't always stay sexual.

Or focused on one person, as Erika notes.

He's a quantum jump above a bad boy. He murdered his 81 year old landlady. These things happen to the best of us, but he also killed her cat. Not only that, he dismembered the dead cat. That's overkill....Men might sometimes form unjustifiably high opinions of women with great racks, but women are far more susceptible to falling in love with their romantic illusions than with the actual man.

Russell Brand isn't exactly the apex of stability.

Neither is a perfect solution, really. Life sucks, in that particular way. ;-) You also have to take into account what kind of father/life your kids will have - and what kind of genetic code they'll get.

We're grading on a curve here.

I wonder what was wrong with him. Even "drugs" doesn't really seem to answer that question.

It has always been that way, they just change the drug.

Back in the day it was marijuana that would make you eat peoples' faces and have sex with clocks...but then they said it was cocaine that made you do that...then pcp...then crack...then meth...then bath salts.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

why are people taking these drugs knowing the results?

I'd guess mainly a general distrust of gov't and authority.

Once folks figure out for themselves that Uncle Sam is lying about the effects of grass, they figure he is lying about all the other drugs as well.

Freakish strength and a lack of response to pain make me suspect meth.
