"Two [University of Wisconsin—Stevens Point] students trapped in the New Zealand wilderness by a snowstorm survived for nine days..."

"... by rationing their supplies of peanut butter and rice - and warming themselves in hot springs."

They weren't going to starve to death in 9 days no matter what.

Rationing made them more comfortable.

What..no bratwurst? Well, brats wouldn't keep. How about another Wi. staple the ubiquitous relish tray.

Survive? Hell, that sounds like my vacations.

I've never been trapped anywhere or in any kind of a survival situation, but peanut butter and hot springs sounds pleasurable.

On all my wilderness canoe trips, I've always wanted to be wind-bound when it was time to come out. Has never happened.

The Blonde agrees with Ann.

Natural hot tubs and lots of peanut butter is better than 2 weeks at Sandals.

He said the nights were the worst as rain and sleet hammered their tarpaulin, and the river roared threateningly beside them.

Looking at their picture, I can't imagine how they would have occupied themselves all of those long days. Oh, wait, yes I can.

"rain and sleet hammered their tarpaulin"

They had a tarp. It performed its function. What's the problem?

"the river roared threateningly beside them."

They went to find the wilderness and they found it. I ask again; what's the problem?

Why is he smiling in that hot springs pic, and what is she holding on to?

It amazes me the number of people who fail to recognize the word "wild" in "wilderness" and prepare accordingly.

In this case, all I see them really needing are more lubricants, condoms, and peanut butter.

Peanut butter is magic food!

Those pictures dont' exactly scream 'terrifying ordeal in the wilderness'.

From the article, do we really think the mom from Minnesota used the word 'mum'. Isnt' that a brit thing?

She looks better without the piercing in the lower lip.

Yeah, they'll both remember that as the Best. Vacation. Evah!

Most of the time if you spend nine days in the wilderness (lost or not) one the really unpleasant things is how everyone involved subtly tries to position themselves upwind of everyone else.

Sometimes not so subtly.

But these kids had a frickin' hot spring!

Unbelievable.

So they had a cleansing fast and soaked in mineral waters - oooh survivors!!

what bullshit.

Sigvald was right.

They weren't going to starve to death in 9 days even without food, and they had water (which you do need much sooner than 9 days.)

Wet and cold is pretty nasty, but they could warm up regularly.

And they did have some food.

Though I'm sure they were pretty hungry by the time the river went down enough to walk back.

Upon further review, it does not sound like my vacations. They had a freakin' hot bath!

Survive? Hell, that sounds like my vacations.

I had an aunt that used to go to a fat farm around Santa Barbara which sounded worse than this. And she paid a lot of money for it.

The young man is "an environmental science major" as was the student who cut her leg on a zip line in the wild somewhere and is losing limbs from flesh eating bacteria. Grizzly Man was self-taught, but grandiosely ignorant of nature as well. And in Santa Monica, such types are protesting the killing of an adult mountain lion springing around downtown.

We are doing a huge damage to people teaching them they can live "in harmony" with nature.
