Vlog!

Based on your questions here...

... including discussion of the movie referred to here ("Rescue Dawn").

CORRECTION: In the video, I incorrectly state that "The Pianist" is a fictional story. I'm terribly sorry to have forgotten that it's a true story.

Great answer to my question. Thanks.

Just an aside -- I notice that you almost always wear a nice necklace. The beaded one you wore on the previous vlog (on the 27th) was so pretty with the cool colors. Where did you get it?

Ann Althouse said...

That necklace is from Sassafras -- on State Street in Madison. That is my favorite women's store in Madison, where I buy most of my clothes and casual jewelry.

I really like that store. The last time I was in Madison, I picked up a number of pieces of jewelry. Every time I wear one, someone says something. I also like the clothes, but I don't think they work on me, for whatever reasons; however, I bought a couple of items as gifts, and they were very well received.

Thanks for vlogging again! I would rather watch a video than read, I do too much of that at work!

Don't edit! That was a fabulous answer :)

I didn't ask any questions, but the vlogging idea is really cool. Thanks for doing this! :)

You must be having more of a summer than we are: 'Althouse - great shoulders'.

Thank you for vlogging.

I enjoy it, actually more than your writing.

I like the interactive aspect with you readers.

You come across different verbally than from what I take from your writing-I like that.

You also have beautiful eyes-don't feel creeped out by my comments I am one of your urban gays. I agree with your comments on why you have a large gay readership.
I think another reason is that you are a strong woman-gays like that.

Ah, The Pianist. What a great film.

They did a clever--and, for me, very moving--bit of telegraphing for those of us who speak German. Throughout the film, whenever we see the nazis interacting with the Jews, the Jews are always addressed as "du," that is, "you, familiar," which in the 1940s in Germany one simply didn't do with a stranger. When the SS Captain finds the hiding Pianist, it is, of course, immediately apparent that the Pianist is a Jew in hiding... yet the Captain addresses him as "Sie," that is, "you, formal." A German-speaker knows immediately that this is going to be a different encounter than all the others in the film, but it takes a while for that fact to play out, no doubt adding to the tension for non-German-speaking viewers.

I was heartbroken to read at the end of the film that the Captain died in a Soviet prisoner of war camp. I would have wished for a better end for him.

Regarding the gay men thing--

Oh, it must be the Judy Garland vibe you give off. That and the strong resemblence to Ethel Merman.

Hi Ann,

You say that you don't do impressions, but you are able to. A couple of vlogs ago you immitated the voice type that the actresses on "Scrubs" use. It sounded just like Sarah Vowell. You do a great impression of her--at least her voice, I don't know what she looks like.

I already did an impression of you. I have it on VHS. Shall I put it on YouTube? It was almost 20 years ago when we did Law Revue [theplaynotthebook] and we did the "Parade of Professors" fashion show. All I had to do was dress like you then [black cropped pants, bright socks, boyfriend jacket] and flip my hair. It wasn't a refined impression, but it got a few laughs.

Ann has a gay following, because she actually has respect for gay people. It's that simple.

It's hard to name one blog on the right, except for Andrew Sullivan that has nothing but utter contempt for gay people. That includes blogs like Instapundit and Volokh, which are vehemently anti-gay.

Ann Althouse said...

Ruth Anne: Hmmm.... yeah, I guess! Of course, I knew nothing about this. I've only attended Law Revue once...

DTL: How are Instapundit and Volokh anti-gay?

Unknown said...

They are both personally anti-gay, but their public policies can be considered neutral.

Well here's proof that Volokh is personally anti-gay. This really is hate-speech when you get right down to it.

http://volokh.com/2003_03_16_volokh_archive.html#200030290

Not to mention Volokh's posts about how gays "recruit" straight people to become gay.

As for Reynolds, he'll link to jibberish saying that no more than one or two gay people have been victims of hate crimes over the last decade, which is of course just absurd. In New York alone, there's been a couple of gay people murdered just for being gay over the last year. And of course every time he criticizes Sullivan, he has to throw in an anti-gay slur, calling him "hysterical" and what not.

Others might not see it, but it's really hard for a gay person to miss - just the constant condescending attitude towards us.
