White shoes = death.

Just one of the many insights from Alan Sepinwall in his spoiler-filled account of the penultimate episode of "The Sopranos." And here's the Television Without Pity recaplet. I'll write something about this extremely eventful episode after I watch it a second time. I always need that second watch, which, to me, proves the greatness of the show -- because I need it and care enough to do it.

ADDED CONFESSION: The main reason I have to watch the show a second time to understand it is that the first time around, I cannot get over the feeling that nothing is happening and nothing will happen. I know, rationally, this is wrong, but it is a deep-seated feeling that I can only overcome by watching the show and see that things happen. This is the main reason I avoid TV dramas and rarely go to the movies. I've had this feeling for the longest time, and I know it's ridiculous! You know how scenes always begin as if things are going to go along in a routine, normal way? Of course, it's done and I know it's done to make it more exciting when unusual or violent things happen. Yet, on an emotional level, I fall for it so deeply that I get bored and inattentive.

So many neat tidbits in last night's episode..

...Kupferberg's distorted eyes behind the lenses of his glasses...The "Flatbush" salon...The "Blue Comet" of death...Dr. Melfi's ghastly grey dress...The vile porn video...the use of type (from the psych. article) to convey cold information...the magnificent editing in the toy train rub-out sequence...

And after A.J.'s humiliation at this father's hands, revenge must surely follow...

"White shoes = death."

I thought this post would be about the moral dangers of accepting jobs at really old WASP law firms in NY and Boston!

I think Phil will succeed, because Tonys' Family (and family) are already rotted at the core. Maybe that will mean defections of those close to him, I don't know...

Great episode.

Once again, I will assert that this season has wasted so much time with A.J. that the vastly more interesting characters are left wanting.

Silvio is a superior character, and the lack of time devoted to his shooting and hospital stay is disappointing, at best. Same with the death of Bobby. That shooting scene was amazing, but his death will be barely recognized.

I'm sorry to offend the loyalists, but in the rush to end the show, too much is being shortchanged. These characters and the viewers deserve more.

I was like that with "Rome" and "Dexter". Had to watch "Rome" at least twice to get the significance of the character interaction, and "Dexter" to enjoy all the hints and foreshadowing.
